IBSC Mandatory Individual & Group Safety Equipment

The carrying of key personal and group safety equipment is mandatory on IBSC trips.  All of our trips take place in the Scottish mountains in winter conditions and this equipment is necessary to prevent accidents or help with rescue. They may well save your life if things do go wrong.

It is the responsibility of individual club member to carry all of the items listed below. If you do not, then you may not be allowed to go with the group.

  • Helmet
  • Ski Crampons
  • Ice Axe
  • Boot Crampons
  • Transceiver, Shovel & Probe
  • Headtorch
  • Warm insulating layer/s
  • Personal survival bag

Additionally, at least one each of the following items should be carried by every group on an IBSC trip:

  • Map & Compass (preferably at least 2 sets in the group)
  • Group Shelter/s (preferably with enough space for all trip participants)
  • First Aid Kit (including Sam splint)
  • Personal Locator Beacon or equivalent satellite communicator (e.g. SPOT tracker, Garmin inReach)
  • Thermal Survival Bag (Blizzard Bag)

It is the responsibility of the Trip Contact to ensure group safety equipment is carried.
IBSC has 4 x Group Safety Kits for loan. They contain all the equipment listed above except map & compass. If you have your own items these can also be used, but must be appropriate for the group size (e.g. first aid kit should be big enough for group use, likewise group shelter should be at least 4 person).  Group safety equipment should be shared out amongst the members and everyone should know who has what.

Reminder: Groups should be no more than 6 persons in size.
