Darkness enveloped the glen as we cycled the last couple of kilometres to the lodge. As club and Inverness newbies we had been advised that this was the trip to get on. So it was with much excitement that we approached the weekend’s luxury accommodation. Unfortunately, given the lean conditions and appalling forecast, ski kit was left behind.
Iain had arrived earlier so we had a warm welcome and the fires were roaring. By 9pm, the full team – Rory, Jo, Phil, David, Xavier, Paul, Iain, and Alasdair – had assembled and plans were being made for Saturday, which was looking like the best day of the weekend. Maoille Lunndaidh was to be the rambling objective for all apart from Paul, who’s ticking perversions dictated a visit to a couple of the nearby Corbetts – Sgurr na Feartaig and Beinn Tharsuinn.
Saturday dawned windy with savage squalls tearing up the glen. But once breakfast had been consumed and coffee brewed, there were occasional glimpses of blue skies and the tops had cleared of cloud. With increasing enthusiasm, we headed out on to the hills, braced against the strong westerly gale. As usual with Scotland, the effort was well rewarded and as we gained the summit plateau, we revelled in the views across the wild hills of Monar. The feeling of isolation and space was humbling. It wasn’t the weather to hang around, however, so we quickly headed down to find a spot to eat our butties (piece). That just left the bogs and river crossings to be negotiated before returning to the lodge. We celebrated a successful day out with cream and whisky hot chocolates.
The forecast for Sunday was terrible – 80 mph and plenty of rain – so we didn’t hold back on the eating and drinking! Champagne was cracked open and we tucked into a great spread. This was followed by whisky, tall tales and card games around the fire.
Most of the team left by lunch the following day leaving Iain, Jo and myself to “enjoy” 10 kms of wet and wild running over the wire bridge and up towards Bealach Bhearnais.
I love how on these trips everyone pulls together to ensure a great time whatever the weather and conditions. Thanks to all for bringing top grub, plenty of energy and making us feel so welcome in the club. Finally, thanks to our Trip Contact David for creating order from the whatsapp chaos and organising a great weekend.
