Igloo trip and ski

Summary- Geàrr-iomradh

Hi peoples

It's that time of year again when we amaze others by camping overnight in a fridge! Check out the Grand Shelters web site for the techie details

Last year we had an easy time by skiing a couple of kilometers from Coire na Ciste car park. For those who have igloo camped high on Carn Ban Mor or in the Glen Affric hills it isn't quite the same experience when the lights of Aviemore are a short distance away.

To make the trip this year a little more adventurous but without the long haul up from Glen Feshie I propose camping on the slopes of Toll Cregach where we have previously had sucessful trips.

Chris Townsend will be joining us again to provide a second Igloo building kit (Ice Box by Grand Shelters) and if we have enough on the trip either 8ft, 9ft or 10ft diameter Igloos will be built.

I'm happy to provide the usual pasta and tomato sauce main meal along with Apple Pies, Cream, tea bags, gas stoveand pans and hopefully this year Bacon rolls at breakfast (last year our day tripper helpers went off with supplies!). If you want to do your own catering please let me know. You will need to provide lunch for Saturday and Sunday and remaining breakfast items along with any snacks and cutlery, bowl mug etc.

A pair of waterproof gloves is essential. A good three season sleeping bag and a good insulating sleeping mat are required along with your usual winter mountaineering/skiing clothing. This is an overnight in winter conditions and although the Igloo provides a very secure windproof shelter you must be prepared for cold conditions.

We have been running this event for seven years without needing to cancel but as with any event it is subject to the weather conditions. The forecast is for conditions to get colder next week with snow to lower levels which is good but with warmer conditions in to the weekend (still likely to be snow at height). There is plenty of snow in Glen Affric at present as we've had about 3 feet of snow this winter season at my house. All gone at 160m asl as of today but plenty of snow above 600m. Providing we can locate a good snowdrift then building will not be a problem but conditions may not be great for skiing.Final confirmation of event will be provided on Thursday evening when the weather forecast will be more accurate. Please confirm if you are still interested in this trip so I can get supplies organised before Thursday.
